The Six C’s of Motivation

After reading both Dan and Tim’s comments on ‘The Six C’s of Motivation’ I thought it would be worth reading the article.

Using the case study of Ms. Betty, Shiang-Kwei Wang and Seungyeon Han from The University of Georgia discuss the Six C’s of Motivation, these being, Choice, Challenge, Collaboration, Constructing Meaning, Control and Consequences.

The two C’s that most interested me were Choice and Collaboration. When we give students choice we provide them with a greater want to complete a task as we have provided them with the opportunity to select a topic or theme that is of interest to them. From personal experience I know that it is far more motivating to complete a task that I have chosen the topic for rather than one that has been chosen for me as it encourages me to expand the knowledge I have in an area that interests me. I can see the benefit of providing students with choices as it motivates them to share and expand ther knowlegde in their interests.

I also found Collaboration to be of interest, as my selected topic for this blog, is using blogs in classrooms. Collaboration allows students to share knowledge and ideas. It has proven to benefit students as they can have access to knowledge from other students. Collaboration does not have to be specifically classroom based, it can be over the internet through the use of a blog. Blogs will also provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with students from outside their classroom and gain knowledge and ideas and be able to communicate with a worldwide audience.
