The Summer Travel Blog – Johanna Riddle

In my search through some of the journals i came across Johanna Riddle’s article about a travel blog she complied when she was given a grant to go to China over the summer.

As she had been teaching Ancient China to her year 3 class she thought this would be a great opportunity to share her new blogging skills with her class while she was away. As she would be away over the summer break her students would be accessing the blog from home. On her blog she included maps and photos to provide visual aids for her student, collegues and family. As her trip progressed she was amazed to see the feedback she was recieving, students, teachers, family and teachers from other schools were all responding to what they had been reading on her blog. Students would even log on with their families to keep informed on her trip.

She was really impressed with the result, and this demonstrated that although she was away and the class was on holidays, that her students were still learning through online communication. This blog can also be used in her classes later as her students can see the documentation of her trip online. The blog can be used as a stimulus for class activities and can lead to students researching further and also be encouraged to create their own blogs.

You can view Johanna’s Blog, and have a look for yourself, and maybe get some ideas for creating your own travel blog for your teaching.
